HC - Hereditary Cataract
Hereditary Cataract is shown through a blood test and lead to blindness. It is graded Clear, Carrier and Affected.
Clear - The dog has two normal copies of the gene and will not develope nor pass a defect gene to its offspring.
Carrier - The dog has 1 copy of the mutated gene. It will not develope the disease, but may pass the defect to 50% of its offspring.
Affected - The dog has 2 copies of the mutated gene and will develope the disease. Both parents must be carriers.
Eye diseases
Through an eye screening it is possible to find a broad spectre of eye diseases. In the SBT, the most common are PHTVL/PHVH.
PHTVL/PHVH is an eye disease which causes changes in the lense. According to grade it may lead to cataract and blindness. In Sweden 0,7% of the SBTs are diagnosed with PHVH.
Distichiasis means that the dog has wrong growing eye lashes that may irritate or harm the eye.
In Sweden 7,2% of the SBTs are diagnosed with Distichiasis.
Cataract means a cloudness in the lens that does not pass light into the eye. It comes in different forms and because of different reasons. In Sweden 4% of the SBTS eye screened are diagnosed with some form of cataract.
