Skin issues, allergy and demodicos

Demodicos

Demodicos is shown as hairless spots and exists in two forms: local and general. Signs of Demodicos my be loss of hair, flush on skin, dandruff and thickened skin.

Local demodicos is diagnosed when there are at most 5 small round flushy, scaly and hariless parts of a front leg or face. Local demodicos passes in 90% of the cases on its own without treatment.

General demodicos is diagnosed when there are more than 5 hairless parts, or when a whole area is affected; the whole face or a whole front leg, or more than one paw. This is more difficult to treat than the local. It appears on large areas of the skin and may result in itching, loss of hair, thickened skin and infections.

In an enquiry made by the Swedish SBT Club in 2010, 9% of the owners said their dog has or have had demodicos.

Furunculosis

A furuncle is a small pus or blood filled boil on the paw, and is often a consequence of athopy or demodicos.

Allergy

Allergy may be the cause that  the dog nags, itches and licks unusal much. There are many kinds of allergies that should be diagnosed by a skin specialist to determine if the dog is allergic and to what.

According to a enquiry made by the Swedish SBT Club in 2010, 16-17% of the SBTs have some form of allergy or skin issue.
